You don’t have to be a particular age before you can begin to take flying lessons. However, you do have to be at least 16 years old before you can solo an airplane, and 17 before you can be issued a pilot certificate. Many young people start flying in their teenage years! As for being “too old”, most student pilots are people who are chasing a lifelong dream of taking to the skies. It isn’t unheard of for folks who are 50, 60, or 70 years old to be taking flying lessons.

The more you hang around the airport, the more you’ll realize that while there are some very wealthy people (with REALLY nice airplanes!), most pilots are normal middle-class folks. We know people from a broad range of professions and income levels that fly and own aircraft. Flying doesn’t have to be an outrageously expensive hobby. You can rent an airplane by the hour, join a flying club, share ownership with a small group, or buy your own airplane outright.

Think about how much some people spend on boats, jetskis, ATV’s, and RV’s. Most of these toys don’t have half the utility of an airplane! If you consider how much time those other vehicles spend in a garage or storage unit, the cost of ownership per hour of use is incredible! Take a minute to browse one of the many aviation classified websites such as Trade-a-Plane or Barnstormers. You’ll see many fun, very airworthy planes available for less than the car you're driving!

Earning a pilot’s certificate is one of the most useful things you can do. If you want to pursue a career in aviation, there are many ways to earn a living other than flying for an airline. If you’re learning just for the fun of it you’ll be able to take family trips, go play a round of golf across the state, travel for business, volunteer for charities, and anything else you can dream of.

Again, this is very dependent on the individual. The minimum number of hours required by the FAA is 40 flight hours. While some dedicated individuals may be able to learn that quickly, the average is 50-60 hours. We recommend that you fly at least twice a week during your initial training. This way, you will better retain the unique motor skills developed in learning to maneuver the aircraft. Typical lessons are two hours, with over half of that spent in the aircraft. The remainder of your lesson will be spent briefing before flight and debriefing after your time spent in the air.
